Intern Spotlight: Stela Khury scores at the Sacramento Bee

Headshot_StelaKhuryThe NAHJ Bay Area sponsored summer intern at the Sacramento Bee, Stela Khury has in her month at the regional newspaper brought awareness and recognition to the voices and issues of a community which in this case is that of the residents in California’s state capital.

She showed her chops covering reactions to the United States Supreme Court decision which makes same-sex marriage legal across the 50 states. She explained the difficulties a non-profit in Sacramento whose mission is to promote Brazilian culture to fundraise and renovate their center. She highlighted the efforts of Native American men want to leave behind a life of alcoholism and abuse to become better fathers. And, she also took us in the mind of a Sacramento teen cast to play the voice of the little girl Riley in this summer’s blockbuster from Pixar Inside Out.

Khury recieved a $1,500 grant from the NAHJ Bay Area chapter to help cover some of the cost associated with an internship at the Sacramento Bee. The funds were received as a grant from PG&E.

“Thank you again for the Bay Area NAHJ’s support,” Khury shared on the chapter’s Facebook page. “I’m doing my best to repay your kindness with good reporting!”
